In Krity's shoes: Conquering the Fashion Industry One #OOTD at a Time

Name: Krity Shrestha

Hometown: Kalamazoo, MI

Where do you live? New York

What does it mean to have a voice?

Having a voice means having power, a confidence to speak up

How did you find your voice?

My grandmother largely inspired me and the fashion industry further encouraged my voice.

What event or series of events led to you finding your voice?

I think my grandmother, who raised me, really helped me to find my voice. She was a single woman who overcame abuse and sacrificed a lot in her life. She built a school for children who needed money to get an education in Nepal. My grandmother showed me early on how doing good things, helping others, and speaking out on important issues can change the world.

Tell me about when you finally found your voice.

I think I am still trying to find my voice every day. My area of expertise is fashion and beauty. I understand fabrics, style lines, colors, and what compliments someone. I try to show people how fashion and beauty can not only enhance their outer appearance but can truly change how you feel on the inside as well. When I put on a piece of clothing I really love, it completely changes my mood and gives me more confidence. Same thing with beauty, a great lipstick can make me feel more beautiful. These little things make me feel beautiful and I think that makes me give off better energy into the world.

The fashion industry has changed my life in so many ways. I moved to NYC for fashion. I took a leap of faith four years ago without a job or a set plan. I was so shy and did not speak out. Since finding a job and meeting new people, I have slowly gained more confidence. Whenever I hear back from people that they have been helped out by something I did or said, that always motivates me to speak up

Define “voice” and why it is important?

I think having a voice means having power. Your voice influences your friends, family, and your community. It is important to me because I believe it can truly help someone find themselves and/or help someone better themselves.

What advice do you have for someone trying to find their voice?

One piece of advice I have for someone trying to find their voice is to surround yourself with people who inspire you to become a better person. I think having a good foundation is the best way to grow and to be able to help others grow.
