What does it mean to have a voice?
Say what you mean and mean what you say.
How did you find your voice?
I listened to my needs for a change, instead of others. I followed my gut; Stopped doubting myself; Stopped being afraid. I just went for it.
What event or series of events led to you finding your voice?
My background is in Retail Branding/Merchandising. I came from a time when everyone went to the mall to shop. I loved shopping and loved the idea of building beautiful stores to help customers have the best shopping experience. My gift was a visual eye. From the window displays to the way the store looked and felt, is a science. It was something I was really good at and enjoyed for many years by managing large retailers in the US and Canada.
However there was a downside to the creativity. As shopping was shifting to online, my job was always a target. All the stores I had opened were starting to close. I got tired of it and decided to write my own story and do my own thing. I took a chance and decided to create my own brand based around something I loved.
Tell me about when you finally found your voice.
I feel like I always had somewhat of a voice. I’ve always been super independent and gone for what I want. At different ages, I had different voices. At 15, I knew I wanted to work and make my own money so I stood in line at the unemployment office to find a job. I still think that is so funny, lol. At 22, I knew I wanted to be an independent woman so I moved out of my parents’ house and got my own apartment. At 26, I wanted to move to NY because I knew this is where I needed to be. After being in a shaky industry and having to start over and over, at age 39 it was time to do my own thing. I knew I had talent and God put me in that branding position in 1999 for a reason. It was because I was meant to do what I am now. Everything I’ve been doing since Day 1 in my career has helped me to build my brand and my business.
I knew I could build a brand and that is exactly what I decided to do - full time. That’s when I finally found my true voice. You know when it just clicks and you are like “this is why all that happened?” I never looked back.
Define “voice” and why it is important?
Voice to me triggers different actions. You visualize it, write it down, say it out loud, and just make it happen. Do things how you see it. Don’t just say it but execute.
Voice to me is not just spoken but it is an action. Saying what you want and just doing it. Being clear and laser focused without letting anyone steer you away but to reach your goal. Being consistent and true to yourself.
What advice do you have for someone trying to find their voice?
It is not something that comes easy. Be patient. Figure out what you want and just go for it. At least try it. If you don’t, you will always wonder what if...
